🚛 Tachographs Become Mandatory for 2.5–3.5 t Vehicles Starting 2026

Starting July 1, 2026, light commercial vehicles with a gross weight between 2.5 and 3.5 tons, used for international road freight transport, must be equipped with a smart tachograph (version 2 – Smart Tachograph Gen2).

This measure is part of the European legislation introduced under the Mobility Package I, initiated by the European Commission, and is regulated by:

👉 Official information can be consulted on the European Union legislative platform EUR-Lex and on the European Commission’s website (Transport & Mobility).

The extension of the tachograph requirement to this category of vehicles marks an important shift in European road transport. The rule applies to vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tons, including those used with trailers or semi-trailers, when performing international transport or cabotage operations. At the same time, the obligation remains in force for vehicles designed to transport more than 9 persons, including the driver.

Failure to comply with these requirements can have serious consequences. In Germany, for example, fines can reach up to €1,500 per inspection, and the risks go beyond financial penalties. Operators may face vehicle immobilization, delays at borders, or even the loss of transport licenses. In this context, early preparation becomes essential for operational continuity.

From an operational perspective, companies must prepare by installing and calibrating a smart tachograph in an authorized service center, using a company card, and properly organizing data. Regular downloading and archiving of information, retaining it for at least 12 months, and training drivers become essential processes in daily operations.

Drivers also play a key role. Holding a valid driver card, respecting driving and rest times, manually entering unrecorded activities, and cooperating during inspections are obligations that must be consistently followed.

As requirements increase, manual data management becomes increasingly difficult. Digitalization is no longer just an advantage, but a necessity. Modern solutions enable automatic data downloads, secure archiving, and quick access to relevant information.

🔗 How TELL Security Systems Can Help

TELL does not supply tachographs but provides solutions for the efficient management of the data they generate.

With the tachograph reader and the easyTRACK platform, you can:

  • automate data downloads
  • access information within a single system
  • correlate tachograph data with GPS monitoring
  • reduce the risk of errors and penalties

👉 In addition, TELL Security Systems also offers a driver tachograph card reader, useful for fast and secure data downloads directly from the card, without complicated processes.

In conclusion, the new 2026 regulations mark an important step toward the digitalization of road transport in Europe.

👉 Preparing in advance is not just an obligation, but a competitive advantage.
